Wireless Network Acceptable Use Policy Updated: November 21, 2005 Access to the wireless network is provided by Polk County Library Cooperative, the Library, to patrons of the Polk County Library System, the Users, "as is" with no guarantees or warranties of any kind. The User is responsible for providing and maintaining his or her own communications equipment at all times. The Library staff is not required to assist in the setup or configuration of one's own equipment. The Library is not responsible in any way for damages relating to the use of the wireless network. The wireless network does not use encryption and takes no special means to protect the privacy a User's data. The User is responsible for the secure and confidential transmission of data on the network including credit card numbers, social security numbers, or other sensitive or personally identifying information. The Library utilizes web filtering technology that may block access to some sites. This filtering cannot be disabled for Users of the wireless network. The User may use the network for accessing internet websites, including SSL secured sites, transferring files using FTP, and sending mail using web-based e-mail accounts such as Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail. The ability to send or receive mail by using SMTP, POP, or IMAP is not available at this time. The User may not: * Make any attempts to damage computer equipment or software. This includes the deliberate propogation of computer worms or viruses. * Use the computer and/or network for illegal, unethical or criminal activity, including slander, libel and the transmission/display of obscene or pornographic material or images is expressly forbidden (see FLORIDA STATUTES Chapter 847). Unacceptable use that is illegal may result in criminal prosecution. * Create an atmosphere of discomfort or harassment for any other computer user, library user or library staff member. * Use the Library's network resources to conduct a business or commercial enterprise, or engage in commercial activity. * Violate copyright laws or fair use provisions. * Use the Library's network or any of attached devices to make unauthorized entry into this or any other computer network. * Misrepresent oneself as another User or attempt to gain access to or modify files, passwords or data belonging to others or by seeking disallowed access to any computer system. * Send Unsolicited Bulk/Commercial Email (spam) If this policy is violated, privileges may be suspended for one year. REINSTATEMENT OF PRIVILEGES MUST BE APPROVED BY THE LIBRARY BOARD. This policy may be modified at any time and without notification. It is the User's responsibility to check for updates to this document on a regular basis and to ensure compliance at all times.
